2025 - 2026 Creativity, Didactic Audiovisual Translation and Children

funded by the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University of Galway, under the Strategic Research Development Scheme.

PI: Dr Francesca Nicora

The Creativity, Didactic Audiovisual Translation and Young People (CreateDAT~YP) project explores innovative approaches to language education for children and adolescents through Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT). DAT engages learners as active multimedia content creators, using subtitling, dubbing, and free commentary to enhance foreign language acquisition. The project aims to foster young people’s creativity, critical thinking, and digital skills while promoting motivation, intercultural awareness, and language competence. Methodologically, the project implements DAT workshops and courses, with pre- and post-tests, control and experimental groups, and qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess effectiveness. By establishing international collaborations, organizing a symposium on DAT, and disseminating research outcomes, CreateDAT~YP seeks to position the University of Galway as a leader in audiovisual translation pedagogy, shaping future generations of linguistically and digitally empowered learners.

Founder: Dr Francesca Nicora
Collaborators: Sveva Zafferri (PhD Candidate) and Federica Curreli (PhD Candidate)

"A Breeze of Italian in the West of Ireland" is a project carried out by the Italian Discipline at the University of Galway, Ireland.
It stems from the need and desire to strengthen our relationship with the local communities and schools in Galway City. It also has the ambitious aim to bring a breeze of Italian along the Atlantic Way, beyond the borders of Galway County.
We hope that this project will serve as a springboard and showcase for a bright and long future for Italian Studies, as well as a way of thanking those who have supported, stimulated, and encouraged us in the pursuit of our goals.
Above, you will find a range of initiatives, divided into target groups, that we hope will be of interest to you.
The project is generously funded by the University of Galway Languages Connect and Post Primary Language Ireland (PPLI). It is also sponsored by the Istituto di Cultura Italiana di Dublino.

The MISTRAL project aims to maximise students’ success in online language learning by creating an open book that supports them to develop appropriate strategies and skills in order to become successful online learners. MISTRAL takes its name from the cold wind which blows strongly into the northern Mediterranean sea. Similarly, this project will promote a fresh and innovative perspective on e-learning by enhancing students’ active participation, motivation and engagement in learning foreign languages online (https://libguides.library.nuigalway.ie/oer/MISTRAL).

2021 MARIN PROJECT

Lead/Author for the MARIN project

The MARIN – Maximising teachers’ success in teaching foreign languages online - initiative comes from the lack of specific training in online language teaching and it proposes the creation of an open book designed to assist teacher trainers and language teachers in the transition from face-to-face teaching environments to e-teaching environments. MARIN aims at maximising teachers’ success in teaching foreign languages online. More specifically, it will help teacher trainers to cope with new digital challenges and train language teachers to respond to the rapidly changing e-learning environment. MARIN takes its name from the warm and humid wind which blows gently onshore from the Mediterranean sea creating fine and pleasant weather. Similarly, this project will foster teachers’ psychophysical wellbeing by providing them with all the necessary tools and skills to build up their e-teaching confidence and create a warm and pleasant e-learning environment.

Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy
Centro di Ricerca Interdisciplinare sul Linguaggio (CRIL)
Visiting PhD researcher
Supervisor: Professor Barbara Gili Fivela
As a visiting PhD student at the Centro di Ricerca Interdisciplinare sul Linguaggio (CRIL- Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy) I carried out data analysis of the intonational features of La Spezia Italian and Galway Irish-English. This research experience allowed me to gain skills in the application of methods and tools for analysing the phonology of intonation within the Autosegmental Metrical (AM) framework with reference to the Tone and Break Indices (ToBI) system.
